Miles van Yperen

Based in Burnaby, British Columbia, Miles van Yperen is a mixed media artist who skillfully blends the techniques of screen-printing, woodworking, and digital art in his creative practice. His foundation in fine arts and graphic design, acquired at Douglas College, has equipped him with a solid understanding of visual expression.

Miles has worked in a range of creative industries, including sign production, print advertising, and animation. This varied experience has broadened his artistic horizons and informs his ability to integrate different media.

From 2011 to 2015, Miles worked as a Visual Effects Instructor at Vancouver Film School.  His dedication to artistic exploration has been further recognized through residencies at Malaspina Printmakers and the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

Currently, Miles is a member of Howe Street Studios in Vancouver, where he continues to evolve his distinctive approach to art-making, merging craftsmanship with digital innovation.

My work explores the intersection of past and present through a hands-on, tactile process. I screen-print original photographic compositions onto hardboard, each one framed in custom-built wood frames that I craft myself.  The images I use are drawn from a wide range of sources—vintage pulp magazines, old stamps, and my own observations of nature and people—capturing fragments of time and culture.  My process is both technical and personal, driven by an appreciation for imagery from the past.  Through this combination of photographic reproduction and handcrafted elements, I aim to evoke a sense of connection to the past and its potential to resonate in today's world.  Each piece is a blend of nostalgia, craftsmanship, and storytelling.
